What eye diseases can be treated with stem cells?

Stem cells are currently recognized as a fairly effective method for treating many diseases. They are also able to fight eye diseases. Scientists have discovered a unique property of stem cells - they can restore the damaged surface of the retina. This discovery has helped many people with poor vision.

A person receives most of the information about the world around him with the help of the visual system. It is quite complex, so it is not at all surprising that there are many ophthalmological diseases that can affect its various elements.

The most common eye disease is stye, or chalazion. Most often it goes away on its own. But there are also more complex diseases that can affect a person’s vision - these are corneal ulcers, diabetic retinopathy and many others. In these cases, you need to seek help from an ophthalmologist. If the disease cannot be treated with simple methods, then alternative treatment, for example, stem cells, can be considered. To date, cell therapy has shown sufficient effectiveness in the treatment of many ophthalmic diseases.

What eye diseases can be treated with stem cells?

Currently, official medicine uses cell therapy to treat the following eye diseases:

astigmatism;
burns and eye injuries;
taperetinal dystrophy;
atrophy of the optic nerve;

Unfortunately, despite the fact that medicine today is developing by leaps and bounds, eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma are still not curable using stem cells.

Nevertheless, scientists have achieved some success in treating the above diseases.

Currently, two types of stem cells are actively used: autogenous (taken from the patient) and allogeneic (fetal), which are capable of producing special active substances involved in the regeneration of damaged eye tissue. These cells, unique in their structure, contain cytokines, interleukins and growth factors that restore damaged tissue and support vital activity in them.

How is the stem cell implantation procedure performed?

The transplantation procedure does not require surgery. A conventional lens is used to secure the graft.
Immediately before the procedure, the patient is hospitalized for examination. It determines whether the patient has any contraindications to it, and if everything is in order, then the bone marrow is collected. 2-3 weeks after this procedure, stem cells are transplanted into the patient. In the future, the patient will have three more such procedures at intervals of three to six months. The full course of treatment, if you add up the days spent in the hospital, is about 2 weeks.
